Each print is on Rives BFK newsprint gray paper (approximately 30 × 30 inches) and hand-signed and numbered in pencil. The suite is based on Johns' 1975 painting \u003cem\u003eUntitled\u003c\/em\u003e (now in the collection of The Broad, Los Angeles).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe crosshatching technique — interlocking diagonal marks that create shifting optical depth and ambiguity — was central to Johns' practice from the mid-1970s onward and represents his most sustained investigation of how marks on a surface can simultaneously describe and refuse to describe. Plate 5 of the suite was included in the 2023 Sotheby's sale from the Estate of Mark Lancaster.
