Keith Haring

Keith Haring is one of the most beloved and widely recognized artists of the twentieth century. His bold lines, radiant babies, barking dogs, and interlocking figures — drawn first in New York subway stations and then on canvases, sculptures, murals, and merchandise worldwide — represent a genuinely democratic vision of art: accessible, joyful, politically urgent, and impossible to ignore.

Born in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, Haring moved to New York in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts. He found his first canvas in the unused advertising panels of the New York City subway system, where he drew in white chalk on black paper backdrops for years before his name was widely known. Those subway drawings were his public classroom and his manifesto — art made for everyone, in the place where everyone passed through.

Rise, the Pop Shop, and Activism

By the mid-1980s, Haring was among the most famous artists in the world. He created murals on the Berlin Wall, collaborated with Madonna and Grace Jones, and opened the Pop Shop — a retail store in SoHo selling affordable multiples, T-shirts, and posters — which was itself a radical act, a deliberate blurring of art and commerce in the service of access rather than exclusivity.

Haring was also deeply politically committed. His work addressed the AIDS crisis, apartheid, drug addiction, nuclear proliferation, and the rights of children throughout his career. When he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he founded the Keith Haring Foundation to support AIDS organizations and arts education programs for children — a direct expression of the belief that art belongs in the lives of young people.

Legacy

Haring died in February 1990 at the age of 31. The Keith Haring Foundation continues his work, distributing millions annually to HIV/AIDS organizations and children’s arts education programs.
