Most people think of charitable giving as writing a check. But some of the most valuable gifts never involve cash at all.
Fine jewelry, luxury watches, estate silver, and other valuables can be donated to a qualified 501(c)(3) public charity — and when they are, the donor may claim a fair market value deduction rather than a deduction based on original cost. For assets that have appreciated over time, or assets you received as an inheritance, this distinction can be significant.
Why donate instead of sell?
When you sell a piece of jewelry or a watch, you may owe capital gains tax on the appreciation. When you donate it to a qualified charity, you generally avoid that tax entirely and deduct the full fair market value — subject to AGI limits. For donors in higher tax brackets with appreciated assets, this double benefit can be substantial.
What we accept
A Brighter Future Foundation accepts gifts of fine jewelry, luxury watches, estate silver, coins, and other personal property valuables. We evaluate each gift individually and respond within one business day of your inquiry.
We do not accept items in poor condition, costume jewelry, or items with significant restoration needs that exceed their likely sale value.
Valuation and appraisal
For gifts valued over $5,000, IRS rules require a qualified appraisal by a qualified appraiser. We coordinate and cover the cost of this appraisal for accepted gifts. The appraisal establishes fair market value — what a willing buyer would pay a willing seller — and forms the basis for your Form 8283 deduction.
For gifts under $5,000, a professional valuation is still advisable. We can help point you toward appropriate resources.
What we provide
Once your gift is accepted, we provide:
- A written acknowledgment letter for tax substantiation
- Coordination of any required qualified appraisal
- Documentation of the item's condition and description at time of receipt
How proceeds are used
Like all donated assets we receive, valuables are sold through appropriate channels and 100% of net proceeds fund arts education grants through A Brighter Future Foundation.
Your grandmother's jewelry. Your father's watch collection. The silver service from an estate you've been meaning to deal with for years. These things can become something lasting.
