Most people who donate art have the same question: then what?
They want to know their work will be cared for, presented properly, and turned into something meaningful. Here is exactly what happens after a painting — or any work of art — arrives at A Brighter Future Foundation.
Step 1: Initial inquiry and review
It starts with a conversation. You reach out through our donation form or by email. We ask for basic information: the artist, medium, approximate dimensions, condition, and any provenance documentation you have. We respond within one business day.
Not every work is a fit. We review each inquiry honestly and let you know quickly whether we can accept the piece. If we can't, we'll say so directly and may suggest alternatives.
Step 2: Acceptance and logistics
If we accept the work, we coordinate pickup or shipping. For larger works or significant pieces, we work with fine art handlers who pack and transport to museum standards. For smaller works, we can provide guidance on how to ship safely.
Step 3: Condition review and documentation
When the work arrives, we document its condition carefully — photographing it from multiple angles, noting any existing wear or restoration, and recording dimensions, medium, and any markings on the verso. This documentation becomes part of the piece's permanent record.
Step 4: Appraisal (for gifts over $5,000)
For gifts we anticipate are valued over $5,000, we coordinate a qualified appraisal. The appraiser is independent, meets IRS standards, and has no financial interest in the transaction. We cover the cost. The resulting appraisal report is provided to you for use with Form 8283 on your tax return.
Step 5: Acknowledgment letter
Within a few days of receiving the work, we issue a written acknowledgment letter documenting the gift. This is your tax substantiation. Hold on to it.
Step 6: Cataloguing and listing
The work is photographed professionally and listed on BrighterGallery.com with full details — artist, year, medium, dimensions, provenance, and condition notes. We present every donated work with the same care a serious gallery would give it.
Step 7: Sale
When a buyer purchases the work, 100% of net proceeds flow directly to the foundation's arts education grant fund. The buyer receives a work of genuine quality. A student somewhere gets closer to an education in the arts.
That is the whole journey. From your home to the gallery to the classroom.
