Nick Doyle

American · b. 1983

Nick Doyle is a New York-based artist whose work investigates masculinity, labor, American working-class identity, and the cultural mythology of the American interior. Working primarily in textiles, painting, and mixed media, he produces works of considerable formal beauty that carry an undertow of psychological complexity and social critique.

Doyle’s practice is rooted in craft traditions historically coded as feminine — quilting, embroidery, needlepoint — which he brings to bear on subjects that have been coded as masculine: football, hunting, manual work, roadside America. The friction between medium and subject is not decorative; it is the work’s engine, a sustained examination of how American men perform and are performed by the culture they inhabit.

His exhibitions have been shown at galleries and institutions in New York and internationally. His work is held in significant private collections.
