The 727 composition originated as a monumental three-panel acrylic painting in MoMA's permanent collection. This silkscreen edition (2016) depicts Mr. DOB surfing Hokusai-style waves — referencing the great wave tradition of Japanese woodblock printing and framing contemporary Japanese identity within its historical and political context.
Takashi Murakami (born 1962, Tokyo) is one of the most influential artists of his generation — the founder of the Superflat movement, whose work bridges Japanese pop culture, anime, Buddhist iconography, and the Western contemporary art market.
