727x777 — Takashi Murakami
727×777 (2016) references Murakami's landmark 1996 painting 727 — now in MoMA's permanent collection — which depicts his alter-ego Mr. DOB surfing traditional Hokusai-style waves. The companion title 777 layers in Murakami's Superflat flower imagery, creating a composite work that surveys his visual vocabulary in a single offset lithograph.
Signed and numbered by the artist, published by Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., Tokyo, 2016. Offset lithographs from this period of Murakami's practice have appreciated steadily, with the 727 screenprint series in particular achieving strong secondary market prices at Phillips and through specialist dealers.
