Teenage Divination Late One Night on Holly Street — Andrea Joyce Heimer
Andrea Joyce Heimer (born 1981, Great Falls, Montana) is a self-taught narrative painter whose densely detailed acrylic works on board draw from her autobiographical experience as an adopted child in suburban Montana in the 1980s. Each painting begins as a written story and is rendered in a flat, paper-doll-like style with marbled colors, stenciled elements, and hand-drawn patterns. The long, prose-style titles are integral to the work — equal parts flash fiction and image description.
Teenage Divination Late One Night on Holly Street (2015) is an early-career work from before Heimer's significant critical recognition, when her investigation of loneliness, suburban mythology, and belonging was still crystallizing. She is represented by Nino Mier Gallery and has been exhibited at the Missoula Art Museum and the Whatcom Museum, Bellingham. Her work is listed on Artsy and has been covered by The Spokesman-Review.
