Kenny Scharf

Spinshine — Kenny Scharf

Kenny Scharf (born 1958, Los Angeles) was a defining figure of the East Village art scene of the early 1980s, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and his inclusion in the 1985 Whitney Biennial marked the height of his initial international recognition. His canvases from this period populate invented cartoon universes with mutant creatures, flying saucers, TVs, and consumer-culture detritus, combining acrylic, oil, enamel, and spray paint in a style he has called "Abstract Pop Surrealism."

Spinshine (1985–86) belongs to this defining moment in Scharf's career — a large-format unique work in a market where his paintings of this period rarely appear. Scharf's relationship with Haring and Basquiat, his participation in Club 57 at St. Mark's Church, and his 1985 solo show at the Fun Gallery cemented his place in the canon of 1980s American art. Works from this period at this scale represent exceptional opportunity.
