Nick Doyle

Purple Rain — Nick Doyle

Nick Doyle (born 1983, Los Angeles; works in Brooklyn) creates large-scale sculptural wall works from collaged and layered denim, using the material's deep indigo tones and bleached passages to build imagery charged with American cultural mythology. His recurring subjects — typewriters, vending machines, consumer objects, and text — invoke the intersecting histories of slavery, westward expansion, masculinity, and fashion that denim itself carries.

Doyle studied at the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA) and CUNY Hunter College (MFA, Sculpture), worked for seven years in Tom Sachs's studio, and is represented by Galerie Perrotin with exhibitions in New York, Paris, Seoul, and Tokyo. Purple Rain (2023) is a dyed and bleached denim on panel, continuing his investigation of American material culture through the most democratic of fabrics.
