$ (1) — Andy Warhol
First exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, in January 1982, Warhol's Dollar Sign series transforms the ubiquitous "$" symbol into a monumental Pop icon, printed in vivid colors on Lenox Museum Board. The series encompasses several distinct compositions printed by Rupert Jasen Smith and published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York.
This impression (27/60) is a unique screenprint in colors — each of the 60 impressions in the edition was printed with individual color variations, making every example distinct. Recent auction results include single Dollar Sign impressions achieving $63,500 (April 2024) and Dollar Sign Quadrant works commanding £105,070 (June 2024). The Dollar Signs series may be Warhol's most direct statement about his own practice: the dollar sign as subject, signature, and joke simultaneously.
