A Gold Book — Andy Warhol
A Gold Book (1957) is a 22-page artist's book bound in a shimmering gold hardcover, featuring hand-drawn images of young men, fruits, flowers, and shoes executed in Warhol's signature blotted-line technique. In this process, Warhol would ink over pencil drawings on non-absorbent paper, then press a second absorbent sheet against it to transfer a characteristically spare, broken line — an early proto-mechanical gesture that anticipates his later screenprinting practice.
Limited to 100 copies, each was personally addressed to a different New York art director as a self-promotional holiday gift. Thirteen plates were printed on gold paper; the remainder on white. Individual plates from A Gold Book are held in the permanent collection of MoMA, New York, and have appeared at Christie's Prints & Multiples sales. This complete book (21 offset lithographs with five hand-colored in watercolor) represents a rare and early example of Warhol's pre-celebrity artistic practice.
