Alexander the Great: one plate (F&S IIB.291-292) — Andy Warhol
Created in 1982 to coincide with The Search for Alexander exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this color screenprint depicts the celebrated Hellenistic bronze bust of Alexander the Great rendered in Warhol's bold Pop palette. The work was published by Alexander Iolas, New York, and printed by Rupert Jasen Smith with his blindstamp.
With an edition of only 25 numbered examples plus a handful of artist's proofs and trial proofs, Alexander the Great is among Warhol's rarest and most coveted print works. This impression is a Trial Proof (TP VII/VIII), one of fewer than ten such proofs produced, each unique in its inking. Warhol's fascination with Alexander mirrors his broader preoccupation with fame, power, and the instability of historical heroism.
