Electric Chair — Andy Warhol
Warhol first photographed the electric chair at Sing Sing Penitentiary from a press image in 1963, and the 1971 portfolio — ten screenprints across ten dramatically different color combinations — represents his sustained meditation on state-sanctioned death. The portfolio edition of 250 (plus 50 artist's proofs numbered in Roman numerals) was published by Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich.
This impression is a unique screenprint on Strathmore Drawing paper — a variant outside the standard Lenox Museum Board edition — making it a particularly uncommon example. Created during an era of intense national debate about capital punishment (the U.S. Supreme Court effectively halted executions in 1972), Electric Chair endures as one of Warhol's most politically resonant works. Complete portfolio sets have been estimated at $200,000–$400,000 at Sotheby's.
