Space Fruits - Work 1 — Andy Warhol
Warhol's 1979 Space Fruit: Still Lifes portfolio transforms ordinary supermarket produce — cantaloupes, watermelons, apples, peaches, pears, and lemons — into monumental, color-saturated Pop icons. To create the source images, Warhol arranged actual fruit under strong angled studio lighting and photographed the compositions, then translated them into vivid silkscreens on Lenox Museum Board (30 × 40 inches each). The edition is 150, plus 30 numbered in Roman numerals.
This hand-signed impression from the Space Fruit series was acquired from Martin Lawrence Gallery. With 89 recorded auction appearances and peak prices reaching approximately £90,000, the series remains one of Warhol's most actively traded still-life portfolios. The works reward close inspection: the shadows are wrong, the scale is impossible, the color is electric — everything about them is just slightly off, which is the point.
