Keith Haring

Statue of Liberty — Keith Haring

Created in 1986, this color screenprint on heavy wove paper (approximately 37½ × 27½ inches) depicts the Statue of Liberty in Haring's instantly recognizable graphic style, with three of his signature dancing figures celebrating at her base, rendered in vivid green. The edition of 100 (plus 25 artist's proofs) was printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York, with his blindstamp, and each impression is hand-signed and dated in pencil ("K Haring 86"). Catalogued as Littmann p. 63.

This impression (9/100) was acquired from Martin Lawrence Gallery. Signed examples are currently estimated between £50,000 and £70,000, and the work has appeared at Heritage Auctions, Sotheby's, and Bonhams. Statue of Liberty is among Haring's most patriotic and universally legible works — a declaration of freedom executed in the same visual language as his subway drawings, now elevated to a gallery format.
